Bible Study Assignment: Compare Nahum 1:15 with Romans 10:15

Nahum1:15. “Behold upon the mountains the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace! O Judah, keep thy solemn feasts, perform thy vows: for the wicked shall no more pass through thee; he is utterly cut off.
Romans10:15. And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!”
It seems to me that Paul (the author of Romans) is quoting Nahum, although not perfectly. I believe that each author has a different purpose in using similar qoutes.
Nahum wanted his readers (the Judahites) to be righteous and holy and trust God while Nineveh was being destroyed. The Ninevites had been cruel captors and neighbors to Judah. The “good tidings” and the “published peace” that this lone messenger brings are confirmations that the destruction of her evil enemy is complete, and consequently there is peace. The religious feasts and duties can continue without fear of retribution from the Ninevites. These tidings are cause for rejoicing.
Paul’s purpose in his quote was to encourage his readers to preach the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ in Caesar’s Rome of Paul’s day (Romans 10:9-15). He wanted the young church there in Rome to preach the gospel to any and all. His readers would be subject to persecutions, and imprisonment, and eventually even death, but their feet were beautiful to all who eagerly awaited and received their tidings, “the gospel”, and Jesus as their Savior, and eternal life.
Both writers wanted to comfort people who had good cause for distress and alarm. Ultimately, both writers wanted their hearers to be faithful to God in the face of obstacles.

Paul was doing what every smart entrepreneur does learning from those who have traveled the road before us.
